Checkpoint 3.7

3.7 — Counseling & Mental Health IntegrationFrontier

What this is

Integration of counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other mental health staff into the district's K-12 technology ecosystem — through training, protocols, curriculum partnership, and participation in policy development and incident response.

Why it matters

Media exposure, AI-mediated harassment, sextortion, cyberbullying, algorithmic amplification of harmful content, and recommender-driven exposure often surface first in the counselor's office, not the principal's. Bringing mental health staff in earlier — not only after incidents — catches earliest signals and creates the best prevention opportunities.

The Framework: Condition #6 (Home/School/Community Partnership). Links to Incident Response (3.8) and Media Balance Curriculum (2.3).

Maturity levels

Not Started
Counseling and mental health staff are not involved in tech, AI, or media policy or curriculum. They respond to incidents when surfaced but operate in a separate track from the tech ecosystem. This is the field norm — integrating mental health expertise into tech and AI governance is not yet standard practice across K-12.
Emerging
Occasional consultation on incidents. No formal integration into PD, curriculum development, or policy design. Staff not trained on emerging tech-mediated harms (deepfakes, AI-generated harassment, sextortion patterns).
Established
Counselors and mental health staff trained on current tech-mediated harms and the contested but live research on how algorithmic platforms affect youth mental health. Partner with teachers on media balance curriculum (2.3). Participate in tech/AI policy development. Clear referral pathways between incident response (3.8) and mental health support.
Expanding
Mental health staff are central partners in the tech ecosystem. De-identified aggregate data from counseling informs policy and curriculum updates. Mental health staff co-lead family-facing digital wellness education. Embedded in every relevant district committee and protocol, not cc’d as an afterthought.
